Paraffin liquid, also known as liquid paraffin or mineral oil, is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless oily liquid derived from petroleum. It is a purified mixture of alkanes and cycloalkanes and is widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications.
🏭⚗️ Production
Liquid paraffin is obtained during the distillation and refining of crude oil. The process includes multiple stages of purification to remove aromatic and volatile compounds, especially when intended for pharmaceutical or cosmetic use.
🔬 Properties
Paraffin liquid is hydrophobic, chemically stable, and insoluble in water and ethanol but miscible with most oils. It has a high boiling point, low reactivity, and acts as an effective lubricant and moisture barrier. It is non-irritating and non-comedogenic when properly refined.
🧪 Applications
• Pharmaceuticals: Used as a laxative, emollient, and lubricant in ointments and oral suspensions.
• Cosmetics and personal care: Found in moisturizers, creams, lotions, and baby oils for its skin-softening properties.
• Food industry: Occasionally used as a release agent or coating for fruits and vegetables (food-grade only).
• Industrial uses: Used as a lubricant, insulating fluid, and anti-rust agent in machinery and electrical equipment.
