Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a high-purity, polar aprotic solvent widely used as a sample solvent and diluent in headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) applications.
🏭⚗️ Production
DMSO is produced via controlled oxidation of dimethyl sulfide under high-purity conditions. The solvent undergoes purification to remove water and residual impurities and is packaged in tightly sealed, moisture-resistant containers to ensure chemical stability and consistent analytical performance.
🔬 Properties
DMSO is a clear, colorless liquid with a high boiling point and very low volatility compared to typical HS-GC solvents. It is highly polar, miscible with water and many organic solvents, and chemically stable under normal laboratory conditions. Its ability to dissolve a wide range of polar and thermally labile compounds makes it ideal for HS-GC sample preparation.
🧪 Applications
DMSO is used as a diluent and matrix solvent for headspace analysis of polar and thermally sensitive compounds. It enables accurate transfer of analytes into the headspace vial and supports reproducible chromatographic results. It is suitable for preparing reference standards and dissolving compounds that are poorly soluble in less polar or more volatile solvents.
⚠️ Safety
DMSO can penetrate the skin and carry dissolved substances into the body. It is generally low in flammability but should be handled with gloves, protective eyewear, and lab coats in a well-ventilated fume hood. Containers should be stored tightly sealed, away from heat and strong oxidizers. Waste must be disposed of according to laboratory hazardous chemical regulations.
