Triethanolamine (TEA) is a high-purity, pharmacopeial-grade organic compound used in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories as a pH adjuster, buffer component, emulsifier, and neutralizing agent in various chemical and biological formulations.
🏭⚗️ Production
Prepared by the controlled reaction of ethylene oxide with ammonia under strictly monitored conditions to produce high-purity triethanolamine. The final product is purified, filtered, and packaged in chemically resistant, tightly sealed containers to prevent contamination and moisture uptake. Quality is verified according to pharmacopeial and analytical standards.
🔬 Properties
A clear, viscous, colorless to pale yellow liquid with mild amine odor. Strongly hygroscopic and miscible with water and many organic solvents. Exhibits basicity, buffering capacity, and surfactant properties. Chemically stable under proper storage but reactive with strong oxidizers and acids.
🧪 Applications
Used in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories for pH adjustment in buffers, cosmetics, and formulations; as a neutralizing agent in chemical syntheses; and as an emulsifier or stabilizer in aqueous and semi-solid preparations. Suitable for analytical and experimental procedures requiring controlled alkalinity.
⚠️ Safety
Corrosive and can cause skin and eye irritation. Handle with gloves, goggles, and protective clothing in a well-ventilated area or fume hood. Avoid contact with acids, oxidizers, and incompatible materials. Store in a cool, dry, tightly sealed container away from direct sunlight and incompatible substances. Dispose of according to laboratory and environmental regulations.
