Ammonium sulfate is a white crystalline inorganic salt widely used as a nitrogen-rich fertilizer and in various industrial and laboratory applications.
🏭⚗️ Production
It is typically produced by reacting ammonia with sulfuric acid, either as a byproduct in caprolactam production (for nylon) or through direct neutralization in dedicated plants, followed by crystallization.
🔬 Properties
The chemical formula is (NH₄)₂SO₄ with a molar mass of approximately 132.14 g/mol. It appears as odorless white crystals, is highly soluble in water, and forms mildly acidic solutions. It is stable under normal conditions and decomposes at high temperatures to release ammonia and sulfur dioxide.
🧪 Applications
Ammonium sulfate is primarily used as a fertilizer to supply nitrogen and sulfur to crops. It is also used in water treatment, protein purification in biochemistry (via salting-out), and in fire-extinguishing powders and food additives.
⚠️ Safety
Generally considered low in toxicity, but inhalation of dust may cause irritation to the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. Protective equipment like gloves and masks is recommended when handling in bulk. It should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area away from strong bases and oxidizers.
