Aluminum sulfate hydrate is a white to off-white crystalline inorganic compound commonly used in water treatment, paper manufacturing, and dyeing processes.

🏭⚗️ Production
It is typically produced by reacting aluminum hydroxide or aluminum oxide with sulfuric acid, followed by crystallization to obtain the hydrated form, usually as an octadecahydrate (Al₂(SO₄)₃·18H₂O).

🔬 Properties
The chemical formula is commonly written as Al₂(SO₄)₃·xH₂O, with x often being 14 to 18 depending on the degree of hydration. It is soluble in water, forming mildly acidic solutions, and appears as white, odorless crystals or granules. It decomposes upon strong heating, losing water and releasing sulfur oxides.

🧪 Applications
Aluminum sulfate hydrate is widely used as a coagulant in drinking water and wastewater treatment to remove impurities. It is also used in paper production to improve ink retention, in textiles as a mordant in dyeing, and in some fire-retardant formulations.

⚠️ Safety
While generally safe in controlled industrial use, it can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract upon exposure to dust or concentrated solutions. Proper protective equipment like gloves and goggles is recommended. It should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area away from strong bases and reactive substances.
