Sulfuric acid 98% is a dense, colorless to slightly yellow, highly corrosive strong mineral acid commonly used in industrial and laboratory settings.
🏭⚗️ Production
It is produced mainly via the Contact process, involving catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, followed by absorption into water to form concentrated sulfuric acid.
🔬 Properties
The chemical formula is H₂SO₄ with a molar mass of approximately 98.08 g/mol. It is a viscous liquid with a high boiling point (~337 °C), highly soluble in water with a strong exothermic reaction, and acts as a powerful dehydrating and oxidizing agent.
🧪 Applications
Widely used in fertilizer manufacturing, petroleum refining, chemical synthesis, metal processing, battery acid, and wastewater treatment. Also utilized as a reagent for pH control and digestion in laboratories.
⚠️ Safety
Extremely corrosive and toxic; causes severe burns to skin and eyes and respiratory irritation if inhaled. Requires full protective gear including acid-resistant gloves, goggles, and face shield during handling. Should be stored in corrosion-resistant containers away from moisture and incompatible substances.
