Sodium iodide

Sodium Iodide is an inorganic compound commonly used in chemistry and medical applications, primarily as a source of iodine ions.

🏭⚗️ Production
Sodium iodide is produced by the neutralization reaction of iodine with sodium hydroxide or by direct synthesis from sodium and iodine under controlled conditions. The resulting solid is purified, dried, and stored in airtight containers protected from moisture and light to prevent degradation.

🔬 Properties
Sodium iodide appears as a white, crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water. It is stable under normal conditions but can slowly oxidize in moist air to form iodine, which may cause yellowing. It is non-flammable and has moderate chemical reactivity, especially with oxidizing agents.

🧪 Applications
Sodium iodide is used in organic synthesis, photography, and as a dietary iodine supplement. It is also utilized in medical imaging as a radiopharmaceutical when labeled with radioactive iodine isotopes and in analytical chemistry for iodometric titrations.

⚠️ Safety
Handle with care; sodium iodide may cause irritation to skin and eyes. Use gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Store away from strong oxidizers. Dispose of waste according to local chemical safety regulations.
