Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) Solution 0.02 N is a standardized aqueous solution widely used in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories for acid–base titrations, pH adjustments, and assay procedures. Its low normality makes it suitable for precise titrations of weak acids and sensitive formulations.
🏭⚗️ Production
Prepared by dissolving high-purity sodium hydroxide pellets in distilled or deionized water and diluting to 0.02 N. The solution is standardized against a primary standard such as potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) to ensure exact normality. Stored in tightly sealed, chemically resistant bottles to prevent carbonation and contamination.
🔬 Properties
A clear, colorless, strongly alkaline liquid, fully miscible with water. It is corrosive, hygroscopic, and may react with acids or atmospheric CO₂ over time. Stable under normal laboratory conditions if protected from moisture and air.
🧪 Applications
Used in pharmaceutical assays, titrations of weak acids, pH adjustments in formulations, and preparation of standard solutions for analytical calibration. Its low concentration allows controlled titrations with minimal risk of overshooting the endpoint.
⚠️ Safety
Corrosive and may cause burns or eye damage. Handle with gloves, goggles, and lab coat. Store in a cool, dry, tightly closed container, away from acids and oxidizing agents. Spills should be neutralized immediately and disposed of following laboratory and environmental regulations.
