Sodium Dodecyl sulfate 10%

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) 10% is a detergent solution commonly used in biochemistry and molecular biology to denature proteins and disrupt cell membranes.

🏭⚗️ Production
This solution is prepared by dissolving 10 grams of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) powder in 100 mL of distilled water. The mixture is stirred until fully dissolved, often requiring gentle heating. The solution is then cooled and can be sterilized by filtration if necessary.

🔬 Properties
The solution is a clear to slightly opalescent liquid with strong anionic detergent properties. SDS binds to proteins, denaturing them by disrupting non-covalent bonds and imparting a negative charge. It is widely used in protein electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).

🧪 Applications
Used for protein solubilization and denaturation, cell lysis, and nucleic acid purification. SDS is a key reagent in SDS-PAGE for separating proteins by molecular weight.

⚠️ Safety
Handle with care; SDS is an irritant to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Use gloves, eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Dispose of waste following hazardous chemical regulations.
