Methyl methacrylate (stabilised) for synthesis is a colorless, volatile liquid widely used as a monomer in the production of acrylic plastics and resins.
🏭⚗️ Production
Methyl methacrylate is industrially produced by the reaction of acetone cyanohydrin with methanol or by the esterification of methacrylic acid. To prevent premature polymerization during storage and handling, stabilizers such as hydroquinone are added.
🔬 Properties
Methyl methacrylate appears as a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic acrylate odor. Its chemical formula is C₅H₈O₂, with a molar mass of approximately 100.12 g/mol. It has a boiling point of about 100°C, is slightly soluble in water, and highly flammable.
🧪 Applications
Methyl methacrylate is primarily used as a monomer for manufacturing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) plastics and resins. It is also employed in adhesives, coatings, and as a reactive intermediate in organic synthesis.
⚠️ Safety
Methyl methacrylate is highly flammable and can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure to vapors may lead to sensitization or allergic reactions. Proper ventilation, flame-resistant equipment, and protective gear such as gloves and goggles are necessary. It should be stored away from heat, sparks, and oxidizing agents.
