Iodine Solution 0.1 N is a standardized aqueous–alcoholic solution of iodine stabilized with potassium iodide, used in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories for precise redox titrations and iodometric assays.
🏭⚗️ Production
Prepared by dissolving iodine and potassium iodide in distilled water and standardizing the solution against a primary standard such as sodium thiosulfate. Stored in amber glass bottles to prevent light degradation and volatilization.
🔬 Properties
A clear, reddish-brown liquid with a characteristic iodine odor. It is light-sensitive and acts as a strong oxidizing agent. Stable under cool, dark conditions.
🧪 Applications
Commonly used in iodometric titrations for the determination of reducing agents (e.g., ascorbic acid, sulfites) and in pharmaceutical assay procedures requiring accurate oxidation–reduction analysis.
⚠️ Safety
Irritating to skin and eyes; may stain surfaces. Handle with gloves and goggles in a fume hood. Store tightly closed, away from light and incompatible materials.
