Gresiss reagent

Griess Reagent is a high‑purity analytical reagent used in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories for the selective detection and quantification of nitrite ions and for indirect measurement of nitrate via reduction. It is commonly employed in biochemical assays to monitor nitric oxide production and nitrite levels in biological, environmental, and process samples.

🏭⚗️ Production
Prepared by dissolving high-purity sulfanilic acid and N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride in an acidic aqueous medium under controlled laboratory conditions. Standardization is performed to ensure consistent chromogenic response, reagent purity, and absence of interfering nitrite/nitrate. Supplied in tightly sealed, light-resistant containers to prevent degradation, contamination, or moisture absorption.

🔬 Properties
A light-colored to nearly colorless solution or powder. Reacts with nitrite under acidic conditions to form a pink to reddish azo dye. Exhibits strong absorbance in the visible spectrum for spectrophotometric measurement. Non-flammable but acidic solutions are corrosive. Sensitive to reducing agents, contamination, and moisture. Stable under proper storage conditions in cool, dry, tightly closed containers away from light and incompatible chemicals.

🧪 Applications
Used in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories for nitrite quantification in biological fluids, environmental, and process samples. Applicable for indirect measurement of nitric oxide production, validation of analytical methods, and monitoring nitrite/nitrate levels in pharmaceutical or chemical processes. Ideal when precise, selective, and reproducible colorimetric detection is required.

⚠️ Safety
Corrosive and potentially hazardous; can cause severe chemical burns, eye damage, and respiratory irritation. Handle with gloves, goggles, face shield, and protective clothing in a well-ventilated area or fume hood. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and incompatible substances. Store in a cool, dry, tightly sealed container away from reducing agents, strong bases, or oxidizers. Neutralize spills immediately and dispose of according to laboratory and environmental safety regulations.
