Colloidal Silicon Dioxide (Aerosil 200) is an extremely fine, amorphous form of silicon dioxide widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food products as a glidant, anti-caking agent, and thickener. Its high surface area and excellent flow properties make it ideal for powder formulations.
🏭⚗️ Production
Colloidal silicon dioxide is produced by the flame hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride in an oxygen-hydrogen flame, resulting in ultrafine, amorphous silica particles. The product is collected as a white, fluffy powder and may be further processed to ensure uniform particle size and surface area, suitable for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food-grade applications.
🔬 Properties
Aerosil 200 appears as a white, odorless, free-flowing powder with very low bulk density. It is chemically inert, insoluble in water and most organic solvents, and thermally stable. Its extremely high surface area enhances adsorption of moisture and liquids, improves powder flow, and prevents caking in formulations.
🧪 Applications
In pharmaceuticals, colloidal silicon dioxide is used as a glidant to improve powder flow during tablet manufacturing and as an anti-caking agent in powdered formulations. It stabilizes suspensions and emulsions in topical preparations. In cosmetics, it acts as a thickener and absorbent in creams and powders. In food products, it prevents clumping in powdered additives and supplements.
⚠️ Safety
Colloidal silicon dioxide is generally regarded as safe for oral and topical use. Inhalation of fine dust should be avoided, as it can cause respiratory irritation. Proper handling includes wearing dust masks, gloves, and goggles in industrial or laboratory settings. Storage should be in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and strong acids or bases that could alter its properties.
