Barium sulfate is produced industrially by the reaction of barium salts, such as barium chloride, with sulfate sources like sulfuric acid or sodium sulfate, resulting in the precipitation of insoluble barium sulfate. In laboratory or pharmaceutical settings, it can be prepared by controlled precipitation from aqueous solutions followed by purification and drying.

🔬 Properties
Barium sulfate appears as a white crystalline powder, insoluble in water and most solvents. Its chemical formula is BaSO₄ with a molar mass of about 233.39 g/mol. It is chemically inert, stable, and has a high density and refractive index.

🧪 Applications
It is primarily used as a radiocontrast agent in medical imaging of the gastrointestinal tract. Industrially, it serves as a pigment, filler in plastics and paints, and in drilling fluids for oil and gas wells.

⚠️ Safety
Barium sulfate is considered non-toxic due to its insolubility but should still be handled with care to avoid inhalation of dust. It should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area away from strong acids. Protective equipment like masks and gloves is recommended when handling powders.
